“Why you study in the university?”

Last time when my friend was asking me this question, I replied him that I study for getting higher pay in the future. Now, I am thinking about this question again deeply.

Every semester, every student will have a lot of assignments and midterm tests. Therefore, at first every student will be rushing for the mid-term tests and consequent with the assignments, and lastly final examination. It is repeating all over the semesters. I have already used to it. All along, I am studying for the exam purpose and doing the assignments for coursework marks. I think every student would probably have the same thought as me.

Recently I question myself that actually why I have to do so many assignments and sit for the stupid examination? Is it merely for the marks? It shouldn’t be like that. I have been thinking this question for a period of time. In the end, I have figured out one thing which is the purpose. It has changed my mindset regarding to the assignments and examination.

What is your purpose?

Different people would have different purposes on the same thing. Your purpose will lead your action. If your purpose of doing the assignments is for submission purpose, you will do it in the last minutes and in the end you will learn nothing. If your purpose is to get higher mark in the assignments, you will start to do your assignments early and approach tutors often; you will learn how to do the assignments in the end. But, if your purpose of doing assignment is to learn, you will gain additional knowledge. I will talk about the usefulness of assignment in the next time.

This is same for the examination.

In the university, there is no point in comparing the intelligence of the students. But, the diligence will do. If you just want to pass the examination, you will study in the last minute. But, if you want to score in the final, you will study harder and start preparing it early. This makes the difference among those who have different purposes.

If you study for the examination, in the end you just know how to sit for the examination only. If you study for knowledge, you will learn. The scope of examination is limited whereas knowledge is unlimited.

If now my friend asks me again that why I study in the university, I will answer him that I study for learning which is not limited to academic; it includes how to work with other people, how to be a leader, gain experiences, cultivating mind, etc.

So, what is your purpose?
